As a professional fishing guide on central Motherlode-area lakes, I've spent a lot of time fishing New Melones, and it's one of my favorite lakes. This Stanislaus River impoundment, situated between Angles Camp and Sonora, is right in the heart of some fantastic fishing country. It's a big lake, too--the fourth-biggest in California I believe--and very deep, up to about 800 feet.
